Orienteering at Bayfront Park
9 February 2008
By: C/Nguyen, Khai

I’m C/Nguyen, Khai and I’m in Delta. The first orienteering event at Bay Front Park was really fun. We got there at around 0815 and walked around the park. Then, C/Drobot decided to roll down a hill, it was really hilarious. The registration process started at 0900 and there was another NJROTC unit from Eureka that also participated in this event. We separated into 4 different groups. My group went first at 1020. C/Dela Cruz, Rose and I couldn’t find the 1st checkpoint because we didn’t really know what to do and how to read a map. But then we found the 1st checkpoint anyway. Then 2nd checkpoint was kind of easy but it took us about 2 minutes to find it. The 3rd checkpoint was hard because it was all the way on the opposite side of the park. After that, we had to run all the way back near the 2nd checkpoint again for the 4th one. 5th checkpoint was the worst, on the map; it showed that it was only about 50-100 meters away from the 4th checkpoint. But we looked around there and found nothing. We decided to run around and look for big rocks since the clue was “cluster of boulder”. C/Dela Cruz saw 3 different checkpoints that were not on the map so we decided to check their numbers anyway. One of them was located in the middle of a big muddle of water and we got our feet wet. After 15 minutes of searching for the 5th one, we finally found it. It was just beyond a hill near the 4th checkpoint so we couldn’t see it earlier… The last 2 checkpoints were super easy. We finished the whole course at 39minutes. The time we took from the 4th checkpoint to the 5th checkpoint was like 17minutes. The team had an after party at Burrito Express after the meet was over. I like orienteering a lot and I’m looking forward for the future events.

Thanksgiving Potluck
21 November 2007
By: C/Gozon, Donavan

I am c/Gozon and I'm in Bravo. The ROTC Thanksgiving Potluck was very interesting since this was the first time I’d seen the unit as a whole. At the beginning it was nice to see all the platoons in formation in front of the ROTC building. We later got called to form up in front of the atrium. Like normal, all the NS1 females went in first, then NS1 males and etc. When I entered the room there was food, lots of it, everywhere. It was heaven! I mean, if anybody had seen food from all different cultures that I know everybody loves. I felt so lucky being the second NS1 male to get food. During the time when everybody was eating I saw a lot of cadets socializing with cadets from other platoons. Upperclassmen where talking with the freshmen, and what not. There was a good family-like vibe going on. Then everybody pulled a prank on c/ Johnny Pham singing, “Happy Birthday” to him, when it wasn't even his birthday. After everybody was done eating, some people played the piano. It was a very relaxing day.

Navy Birthday
9 October 2007
By: C/Liaw, Sarah

I am c/Liaw and I’m in Alfa. Navy Birthday was a really fun experience. I got to see a lot of other cadets and see all of the drill teams perform. The first drill team was color guard. I’m in color guard but I didn’t get to perform. Once color guard was at present colors, someone played the national anthem and all the cadets, saluted the flags. Then UDT was next. I think UDT was really interesting. I like how they all marched in unison, and when they marched, the stomping sounded cool. I’ll most likely join UDT next year. After that was DTWA. When the cadets spun the guns it was really cool, but at the same time, it looked like the guns would go flying and hit someone. Lastly, honor guard performed. As honor guard was at present arch, the youngest and oldest cadet walked underneath and went to cut the cake. The best part of navy birthday was when we had cake. I was the only NSI female in Alfa who attended, so I got the first piece of cake. After that I had to go home. I think next year, everyone should attend navy birthday. It was fun watching drill teams perform and you get free cake!

NS1 Picnic
29 September 2007
By: C/Villanueva, Francis

I'm c/Villanueva and I'm in Charlie platoon. The NS1 picnic was fun and all the games we played were competitive and fun at the same time. The game I liked best was war ball because it was very heart-pulsing. War ball is a lot like dodgeball and just as fun. It was platoon vs. platoon and we played two games. It is basically the same concept as war ball. It was challenging. We lost against Alfa because they were too good at dodging. Before this, we played rugball and it was fun. Our team lost again. Our team doesn't suck but we didn’t have all of our best players. Everyone was good except me. I'm now called, "butterfingers". Well the second game we almost owned, they were ahead by one point. The food was great and the drinks were great too. Then after that, we played basketball then 4-way war ball. 4-Way war ball was fun but if you're hit, you're out. In the basketball activity, I didn’t really participated. I was in the background, walking shame… not really. It was a fun experience and next time I hope more of you cadets can participate more so it can be extra fun. Tug-of-war was fun but I think the other team cheated. We lost all of them and it was sad but it was a good game. At the last tug-of-war it was the NS1s vs. the upperclassmen. We beat the upperclassmen. Mostly because there were more of us. I encourage everyone to go to the picnic next time because you'll have fun like I did. The downfall was that it got kind of boring because a lot of people left and it was sad. It was still fun but most of the upperclassmen had work so its ok. I want to encourage a lot of people to join NJROTC so they can have the kind of fun we have. I'm not saying they can't have fun unless they are in rotc, but they can have fun as well.
